B58 Power Guide: Tune, Downpipe, Intercooler and Supporting Mods
If you own a BMW or Supra on the B58 platform, the smartest way to add power is to build in stages and keep the setup balanced.
The B58 responds well to tuning, but the best results come when airflow and temperature control are upgraded at the same time. At Redline, we usually recommend starting with calibration, then reducing backpressure, then improving charge-air cooling.
Stage 1: ECU tune first
A proper ECU calibration is the foundation. It improves boost control, torque delivery, throttle response, and drivability without immediately pushing hardware limits.

Why start here:
- Immediate performance improvement
- Better throttle mapping and torque curve
- Lets you scale cleanly into hardware upgrades
Stage 2: downpipe for better flow
Once tuned, the factory downpipe becomes a restriction. A quality downpipe reduces exhaust backpressure, helps turbo response, and supports more consistent power under load.

Stage 3: intercooler for repeatable power
Heat is one of the biggest reasons tuned cars lose consistency. An upgraded intercooler helps lower intake temperatures so performance stays stable in warm weather and repeated pulls.

Stage 4: reinforce weak points
As boost and temperature rise, small support parts matter more. Charge piping and couplers are simple upgrades that help reliability.

Build the right package for your goals
Not every B58 owner wants the same setup. Some want a clean daily package with strong midrange. Others want a more aggressive street setup.
If you want help choosing parts based on your exact chassis and use case, contact Redline and we will map out a package that makes sense for your car, your fuel, and your goals.
